DAVID GIVENS – September 2026
Candy’s (and ZEPHYR’s) first recording Summit Studio, Denver, Colorado August 1969.
It was the most requested music ever on the Denver underground music station. It’s the first thing we ever heard on the radio of ourselves. And, this was the first song on the demo that got bids from every major label in LA. Atlantic, Columbia, A&M, Epic, Electra, and ABC all made offers.
Barry Fey didn’t know shit about record companies but he could count money like the greedy fat man he was and he ignored all of the talented and experienced people who made offers and took the one from the new offshoot label, Probe, from ABC because they offered more money up front. No history of dealing successfully with new experimental music like ours. This was not our first bad decision - we chose Fey as our manager.
One take live in our first time in a recording studio. I think it’s pretty good. Candy had been singing in a rock band for about a year.

Legendary 4-Nikators, Boulder Theatre, packed house, late summer 1982. Candy's last gig and last recording in this life. After the show, she left for a year on Isla Mujeres.

Iowa Rock n' Roll Music Association has decided to induct Zephyr's charismatic lead singer, harmonica player, and composer Candy Givens into their Hall of Fame with the 2026 class of inductees where she will join former band mates Tommy Bolin and Bob Berge. Candy was the first female front person in a successful genuine hard rock band. Thanks to terrible management, Zephyr never achieved wide commercial success, but their unique blend of rock, blues, jazz, and country continues to inspire new listeners and they are more popular today than they were 55 years ago.
